Song Analysis 3
Guerilla Radio
Throughout many years Rage Against the Machine has been known as one of the most rebellious and controversial bands of all time. Their notorious lyrics have been aimed at almost all political problems throughout the 1990’s and have caused much debate. Rage Against the Machine also had a unique sound of a mix of rock and rap that made them distinctive from every other band. Rage provided the music scene with many radical and rebellious songs. One defiant song was “Guerilla Radio” and it brought up many political challenges and disagreements.
“Guerilla Radio” has many stabs at the politics and the way the country is being run. Like many of their songs, Rage tries to get the point across that the United States needs to change their ways or nothing will improve. Even though the song was written before the attacks of 9/11, Rage stressed the issue that controversy in the Middle East was not to stop terror but for oil. They say “Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?” This shows that Rage thinks the United States only get involved in foreign affairs, particularly in the Middle East, to gain money or control of prosperous imports, such as oil. This is only one of the many defiant lines in one of the many defiant songs by Rage Against the Machine.
A Guerilla is a member of an irregular armed force that fights a stronger force by sabotage and harassment. The line “Lights out, Guerilla Radio” is telling people to stop watching the lies and listen and react to the wrong doings of the world. Rage Against the Machine never fails to bring out the bad in the world and “Guerilla Radio” is one of the most effective songs in that regard. Like many other Rage songs, the main message of “Guerilla Radio” is to influence people to rise up against the negative aspects of America and to open the eyes of the ignorant to the problems of today’s society. Rage Against the Machine was regarded as reckless and out of line with their lyrics. Their fans were seen as outrageous and extreme because of their actions that were linked to the bands music. “Guerilla Radio” is a song that emphasized that point.
“Guerilla Radio” uses many poetic devices. Repetition is used often by Rage Against the Machine in “Guerilla Radio” to stress the message to the listener. The last stanza has repetition of beginnings of lines with different ends to show the point in a clearer way. It says, “It has to start somewhere, it has to start sometime, what better place than here, what better time than now.” The “it” refers to the rebellion against social ways and the lines are a call to action for the listeners. Rage then repeats the line “All hell can’t stop us now” six times. The lines are sung in an angry and irritated voice to show the feelings of the singer. The line means that once the rebellion starts nothing will stop them from changing the world into a place that they deem fit for life. The poetic devices used in “Guerilla Radio” effectively bring out the meaning of the song so the listener can comprehend it.
Rage Against the Machine never fails to make a rebellious song and “Guerilla Radio” only proves that point. The mix of unique sound with unique lyrics helps to make Rage one of the most well known bands of the 1990’s. The controversies caused by Rage’s songs are a big part of their success and a part of what rock has transformed into. The blend of sounds in Rage’s music set a standard for new bands trying to find their own originality. “Guerilla Radio” is one the best songs by one the best bands.

Creative Project

I'm writing a short story inspired from "9mm and a Three Piece Suit" by Streetlight Manifesto.

(WHA!)Well I know I shouldn't care, But I do and I don't,And I always crack a smile, When I see your punk rock clothes, And you try, try, but you never fit in, And you're never going to so pack it up, pack it in, so there.Steve took three or four,Heather took more,Lit a cigarette, Now they're walking out the door, With a semi automatic and a ski mask on, And they look to one another,And they say to themselves,"What fun." Well I never want to bother, And I never want to hover,Over his or her affairs,Cause (that's not fair!),And it seems to me that you're, Running out of time, and it seems to me, Like you're never going to do what’s right.Jack dropped 21, Jill 22, The look in his eye said, "Brother what are you going to do, with a 9mm and a three piece suit?" They look to one another and say,"Hey motherfucker, who's the fool.?"(BRRRAH!)(WHOA!)Steve took three or four, Heather took more,Lit a cigarette,Now they’re walking out the door, With a semi automatic and a ski mask on, They look to one another, And they say to themselves (“what fun”),Jack dropped 21, Jill 22,The look in his eye said, "Brother what are you going to do,with a 9mm and a three piece suit?," They look to one another and say,"Hey motherfucker, who's the fool.?"

Testify

Testify- Rage Against the Machine

The movie ran through me
The glamour subdued me
The tabloid untied me
I'm empty please fill me
Mister anchor assure me
That Baghdad is burning
Your voice it is so soothing
That cunning mantra of killing
I need you my witness
To dress this up so bloodless
To numb me and purge me now
Of thoughts of blaming you
Yes the car is our wheelchair
My witness your coughing
Oily silence mocks the legless boys
Who travel now in coffins
On the corner
The jury's sleepless
We found your weakness
And it's right outside your door
Now testify
Now testify
It's right outside your door
Now testify
Yes testify
Its right outside your door
With precision you feed me
My witness I'm hungry
Your temple it calms me
So I can carry on
My slaving sweating the skin right off my bones
On a bed of fire I'm choking on the smoke that fills my home
The wrecking ball is rushing
Witness your blushing
The pipeline is gushing
While here we lie in tombs
While on the corner
The jury's sleepless
We found your weakness
And it's right outside your door
Now testify
Yeah testify
It's right outside your door
Now testify
Now testify
It's right outside your door
Mass graves for the pump and the price is set
And the price is set
Mass graves for the pump and the price is set
And the price is set
Mass graves for the pump and the price is set
And the price is set
Mass graves for the pump and the price is set
And the price is set
Who controls the past now controls the future
Who controls the present now controls the past
Who controls the past now controls the future
Who controls the present now?
Now testify
Testify
It's right outside your door
Now testify
Testify
The war is right outside your door

Just like everyother Rage Against the Machine song Testify sends a message of rebellion and of dislike toward the social norms. Testify particularly focuses on the war in Irag. The author writes, "Mister anchor assure me, that Baghdad is burning." This is a kind of sarcastic remark because the author is making fun of the people finding comfort in knowing about the war. Another social remark is "Mass graves for the pump." This shows that Rage Against the Machine thinks that the war is strictly for oil and that the soldiers are dying to gain control of oil. Testify has an obvious message of anger towards society and the war in Irag.

Anthem Pt 2

Anthem Pt. 2- Blink 182

Everything has fallen to pieces,
Earth is dying help me Jesus.
We need guidance, we've been misled
Young and hostile but not stupid.
Corporate leaders, politicians,
kids can't vote adults elect them.
Laws that rule the school and workplace,
signs that caution sixteen's unsafe.
We really need to see this through.
We never wanted to be abused
we'll never give up
it's no use
If we're f***ed up - you're to blame
Let this train-wreck burn more slowly
Kids are victims in this story.
Drown the youth with usless warnings,
teenage rules they're f***ed and boring.
We really need to see this through.
We never wanted to be abused
we'll never give up,it's no use
If we're f***ed up you're to blame
Everything has fallen to pieces
Everything has fallen to pieces
Everything has fallen to pieces
Everything has fallen to pieces
Everything has fallen to ...
We really need to see this through.
We never wanted to be abused
we'll never give upit's no use
If we're f***ed up
you're to blame!

In the Anthem Pt. 2 by Blink 182 rebellion is an obvious message. The author is expressing his dislike of the social ways and expresses them clearly. He says "Kids can't vote, adults elect them." This shows the author's opinion toward politics. He means that even though children can't vote, adults are electing people who are very childish. This is a shot at Bush because he was president at the time this song was written. Another rebellious line is "Drown the youth with useless warnings, teenage rules they're f***ed and boring." This shows the dislike in the way kids are being treated and raised. The author thinks kids should be allowed to have more freedom. He thinks children rebel because they feel repressed. The Anthem Pt. 2 effectively sends a strong social message.

Come on Eileen

Poor old Johnny Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio
Moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried
Sang along, who'd blame them
Now you're grown, so grown, now I must say more than ever
Go toora loora toora loo rye aye
And we can sing just like our fathers
[Chorus:]
Come on Eileen, oh I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
With you in that dress my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty
Ah come on Eileen
These people round here wear beaten down eyes
Sunk in smoke dried faces
They're so resigned to what their fate is
But not us (no never), no not us (no never)
We are far too young and clever
Remember
Go toora loora toora loo rye aye
Eileen I'll hum this tune forever
Come on Eileen oh I swear (what he means)
Ah come on, let's take off everything
That pretty red dress Eileen (tell him yes)
Ah come on let's, Ah come on Eileen
That pretty red dress, Eileen (tell him yes)
Ah come on let's, ah come on Eileen
Please...
Come on Eileen too-loo rye-aye
Come on Eileen too-loo rye-aye
Toora toora-too-loora
Now you have grown, now you have shown, oh Eileen
Come on Eileen, these things they are real and I know
how you feel
Now I must say more than ever
things round here have changed
Too-ra loo-ra too-ra loo-rye-aye
[Chorus]

"Come on Eileen" by Save Ferris uses imagery to describe how the singer is feeling and to describe the person she is talking to. They say "you in that dress" which allows the listener to imagine some one in a dress. Also Save Ferris describes peoples faces to let the listener imagine the scene. The use of imagery in "Come on Eileen" is a big part of the song.

Shining On

I just realized I left my favorite hat in the club last night
Which is tickin' me right off 'cause I
Had that cap since I was real-real small
Then find out just right now
That my main squeeze went through my phone
0ooo
So I guess I'm single now
Imagine that
So I sneak right on The T
The conductor sees me
He's kicking me right off with a frown
I grab my bag and I walk on
Comm. Ave., I hit up Blanchard's
They sell cheap wine, I got six bucks
Bag rips, wine smash
Drink it up avoid the glass
But I can't stop from just smiling
When that damn sun is shining on
Hell, It's just
Shining down all over me
No, I can't help but just smile
While that damn sun is shining on
Dang it's just shining down
Down over me
So now I call up my friend
'Cause his girl must be bored, 'cause
She's been spreading rumors about me
That I robbed her party, but I never had
I pull out my little disc man
I bought from a crackhead down in Reno
But my Melt-Banana Cd
Is all scratched up
I think it's stupid all the people who are moaning
Yeah moaning on
While the sun is shining down
On our city streets
Even all the things people say
Naw, ain't affecting me
Not when that damn sun Is shining down over me
Shining down on me
Born to just never care
Born to just never care
Born to just never care
About the stupid things
People moan everyday
Later on I meet Johnny Trouble
At a bar called Shay's, a spit from Charlie's
We sit outside talking about girls
How they're loons but we like them anyway
No money for pints at the bar
We bring a backpack full of Pabst
0ooo
Under the table we fill our glass
So me and Johnny just sit outside
Warmed by that summer night
While those city stars are shining
Down on our streets
And I can't help from just smiling
While those damn stars are shining down
Yeah those stars are shining
Over our city streets
No, I won't be caught moaning
Not when light is still shining down
And me and Johnny
Warmed by that damn summer heat
And I can't stop from just smiling
When those damn stars are shining on
Yeah, those stars are shining
Over our city streets
Imagine that

In "Shining On" Big D and teh Kid's Table uses imagery to clearify what the song is about. They song expresses that the singer, no matter what, is in a good mood. He uses imagery to further explain the bad things happening to him. He says "bag rips wine smash, drink it up avoid the glass." This uses all the senses because the listener can imagine the noise and sight of the bottle breaking and the laste and smell of wine and how they glass feels. The imagery used in "Shining On" emphasizes the meaning of the song.

Song Analysis

Protest Song
Anti-Flag is an American punk band that has produced many controversial songs with even more controversial lyrics. They have never been a very famous band but are known to those who follow punk music. Their pure punk sound makes them unique in the punk scene now. They are one of the only bands that still have the original punk sound and attitude. Their theories on revolution and disagreement with society are other reason they are distinctive from other bands. In 2003, Anti-Flag teamed up with German punk band the Donots to make “Protest Song.” “Protest Song” is a powerful song that brings states the immoral ways of people today.
Anti-Flag’s “Protest Song” is a song that encourages fan to rise up and protest against the corrupt events and ideas of people in the world. By reading the lyrics the reader would think Anti-Flag is angry at America as a whole and wants people to rise up against it, but they really are only upset with the way America is being run and wants the people to protest against certain thoughts and theories of the others. Anti-Flag shows that they are troubled with the government by saying, “We must confront is WASHINGTON, DC!” This illustrates that in order for America to change for the better the leaders must change their ways first.
“Protest Song” was written while George W. Bush was in office and many people were angered because of the actions he took toward stopping terrorism. Anti-Flag is one band that has shown much dislike on the way America has reacted to the war on terror. They have many songs aimed at the government, and mostly toward Bush. In “Protest Song,” Anti-Flag says, “The Bush ‘War on Terror’, UNCONSTITUTIONAL, UNCONSCIENABLE, we refuse to let him kill, in our name for oil.” These lines are very controversial at the time because many Americans thought that Bush sent troops into the Middle-East only for control of oil, not to fight for freedom of those in grasps of terrorists. These rebellious lines struck a sensitive nerve for those in favor of the war. Anti-Flag made it clear that they were not pleased with America and the people in charge. “Protest Song” was a way they could show their thoughts and express them to all.
“Protest Song” is a well written song with many poetic devices. Anti-Flag uses two poetic devices in the same line. They use anaphora and epistrophe by saying, “You’ve been to our shows, you’ve sung our songs.” This is used to emphasize that they need people to stand with them now at a time of protest. Also Anti-Flag uses metaphors to help enhance the meaning to the listener. One metaphor used is “and that blood which flows from their pen.” This metaphor compares ink to blood and allows the listener to believe that their pen is a knife that cuts deeper into the ground work of society with every letter they write. The poetic devices improve to simplify the meaning of the song and Anti-Flag does a fantastic job in using the poetic devices to get their point across to the listener.
Anti-Flag’s rebellious “Protest Song” is a well written song that clearly shows the message it intended to show. Anti-Flag wanted to open the eyes of their listeners and the affectively did so. “Protest Song” brings out the wrong in the world and asks people to stand up for what they believe in and to fight for what is worth fighting for. Anti-Flag has many more controversial songs, but “Protest Song” is one that stresses the importance of change. The meaning of “Protest Song” is one that everyone needs to think about and try their best to make the world a better place. Anti-Flag’s thoughts on society is a reason why they are one of the most influential and rebellious punk bands for the past two decades and “Protest Song” only solidifies that fact.

And so the time has finally come! The bourgeoisie has signed the war decree with proletariat blood! And that blood which flows from their penIs the closest that they've ever been to the people! You've been to our shows! You've sung our songs! Now we're asking you to add to each chorus you've sung and...Protest!... Against!... Injustice!... State terror!...On the streets of the world for the disempowered! You've sung at our shows,Cheered right over wrong. Now it's time to hit the streets,Back up those words you've sung!Because our voices alone this time will not get it done...Looking to stop a rogue regime?Well the first one that we must confront is Washington, D.C.!The Bush "terror war:" unconstitutional, unconscionable! We refuse to let him kill, in our name, for oil!We know their game,Know they're corrupt! It's up to us to hit the streets -- time to take our rights back!Protest!... Against!... Injustice!... State terror!...On the streets of the world for the disempowered! You've sung at our shows,Cheered right over wrong! Now it's time to hit the streets,Back up those words you've sung!Because our voices alone this time will not get it done...Because the people, united will get it done!Protest!... Against!... Injustice!... State terror!...On the streets of the world for the disempowered!

Found Poem

My party was a tragedy
I held it in Germany
I had mechanical bulls
And a mountain of popsicles
There was a Popsicle shaped like a shark
But then came a baby bear from the park
The bear scared the nice girl
It seemed like the end of the world
It busted its head on the stair
Then walked away without a care
It seemed to all go in slow motion
It was raw like a revolution
Next was an earthquake
Followed by a giant snake
I didn’t mean
For there to be such a scene

Repitition- Don't Worry Desmond Dekker by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

"Don't Worry Desmond Dekker"

What happened up on Hemming's Way well
We will never change
You used to be a friend of mine
The last 5 years went by so fast
So fast I find it strange
The beneficial medicine of time
And I can hear your laughter
It stays with me after all this time
And I still got your records
Clash and the selector
And don't worry desmond dekker's doin' fine
But doors were shut
The lines were cut
The walls went up so quick
The windows of opportunity were small
Brides collapsed
Divides were wide
Sides we had to pick
And oh yeah, I forgot to call
I, I can hear laughter
It stays with me after all this time
And I still got your records
Clash and the selector
And don't worry desmond dekker's doin' fine
Seeds to the roots to the trunk to the truth
It's understanding when it first began
In the day up to the sky
We climbed up so high
And we carried on the only way we can
Laugh on and live
Learn how to forgive
What we have could be as good as what we get
If you forgot
Now I am still gone
What you gave to me back when we first met
What you gave to me back when we first met
I, I can hear laughter
It stays with me after all this time
And I still got your records
Clash and the selector
And don't worry desmond dekker's doin' fine

Repitition- Welcome to 1984 by Anti-Flag

"Welcome to 1984"

Who would Jesus bomb? Yeah, who would Jesus kill?
The double talk is past surreal
The word of god is now the word of hate
War is peace, and freedom is the police state
Can't you see the writing on the wall?
Democracy lays trampled on the floor...
You better believe that...
Hell yeah I'm confused for sure what I thought was the New Millennium is 1984!
Mr. Orwell from the grave, adding fresh ink to the page
As the unpresident declares an endless war...
Welcome to 1984!
Feels like Nazi Germany, and Hitler on TV,
As the unpresident spews his homophobic speech
Didn't the Allies fought a war to end extremist fascist law
So tell me NOW what the f*** are we fighting for?
I just can not take it anymore
Democracy lays trampled on the floor...
Man, isn't freedom great?!?!
Hell yeah I'm confused for sure what I thought was the New Millennium is 1984!
Mr. Orwell from the grave, adding fresh ink to the page
As the unpresident declares an endless war...
Now we've got...
Armies of peace, armed to the teeth, delivering death to make the world a better place
So celebrate the weapons spending, say a toast to Armageddon, raise some hell!
We're all headed straight to hell!!!
Hell yeah I'm confused for sure what I thought was the New Millennium is 1984!
Mr. Orwell from the grave, adding fresh ink to the page
As the unpresident declares an endless war...
Welcome to 1984!

Trendy

"Trendy"
everybody'sdoin' the fish
yea! yea! yea!
everybody's doin' the fish, yea, yea,yea...
it's not so bad bein' trendy
everyone who looks like me is my friend
please don't hate me because i'm trendy
they're not gonna laugh at me again.
everybody does it
why don't you?
everybody does it...
maybe you should too, cause you don't wanna be left out
you wanna be cool.
it's not so bad bein' trendy
everyone who looks like me is my friend
please don't hate me because i'm trendy
(i'm gonna do it because it's trendy)
they're not gonna laugh at me again!
everybody's makin' fun of me
cause they say, i'm so trendy
cause i do what others do
they'll make fun of me
they'll make fun of you
i don't wanna be leftout...
i wanna be cool!
(makin' fun of trendy peopleis the trendiest thing of all.

"Trendy" by Reel Big Fish uses epistrophe to show their emphasis on the fact that they are trendy. They say "it's not so bad being trendy," then two lines later it says "please don't hate me because I'm trendy." This shows that they are trying to show the ups and downs of being trendy. Reel Big Fish is showing that they know how to start trends and be thier own person. The repition of the word trendy shows that it can be good but also bear a burden. "Trendy" is a good example of epistrophe.

Guerilla Radio

Transmission third world war third round
A decade of the weapon of sound above ground
No shelter if youre looking for shade
I lick shots at the brutal charade
As the polls close like a casket
On truth devoured
Silent play in the shadow of power
A spectacle monopolized
The cameras eyes on choice disguised
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?
Yes a spectacle monopolized
They hold the reins, stole your eyes
All the fistagons the bullets and bombs
Who stuff the banks
Who staff the party ranks
More for Gore or the son of a drug lord
None of the above f*** it cut the cord
Lights out guerilla Radio
Turn that s*** up
Contact I highjacked the frequencies
Blockin the beltway
Move on DC
Way past the days of bombin MCs
Sound off Mumia guan be fre
eWho gottem yo check the federal file
All you pen devils know the trial was vile
Army of pigs try to silence my style
Off em all out that box its my radio dial
Lights out guerilla Radio
Turn that s*** up
It has to start somewhere

What better place than here
What better time than now
All hell cant stop us now
All hell cant stop us now
All hell cant stop us now
All hell cant stop us now
All hell cant stop us now
All hell cant stop us now

In "Guerilla Radio" Rage Against the Machine uses anaphora as a means to strongly show their meaning. They say "It has to start somewhere, It has to start sometime, What better place than here, What better time then now." This repition first shows that their rebellion has to start at a place and time then says not and where they are is a place to start. Their repition effectively shows their strong emotion and brings it across in a clearer way. "Guerilla Radio" uses repition in a great way.

Give it away now

In the song "Give it Away Now" the Red Hot Chili Peppers many metaphors are used to show that the singer is living his life the way he wants to live it and that others should do the same. One metaphor used is "lucky me swimming in my ability." This is a metaphor because it compares his method of using all his abilities to the fullest to swimming because when you swim in something you are able to spread out. Another metaphor used says, "dancing down on life with agility." This is a metaphor because it compares the way he is living life to dancing because he is enjoying it and going through it fast. "Give it Away Now" properly uses metaphors to emphasizes the points it is trying to make.

Monkey Wrench

What have we done with innocence
It disappeared with time, it never made much sense
Adolescent resident
Wasting another night on planning my revenge
One in ten
Dont want to be your monkey wrench
One more indecent accident
Id rather leave than suffer this
Ill never be your monkey wrench
All this time to make amends
What do you do when all your enemies are friends
Now and then Ill try to bend
Under pressure wind up snapping in the end
One in ten
Dont want to be your monkey wrench
One more indecent accident
Id rather leave than suffer this
Ill never be your monkey wrench
One last thing before I quit
I never wanted any more than I could fit
Into my head I still remember every single word
You said and all the shit that somehow came along with it
Still theres one thing that comforts me since I was
Always caged and now Im free
Dont want to be your monkey wrench
One more indecent accident
Id rather leave than suffer this
Ill never be your monkey wrench
Dont want to be your monkey wrench (fall in, fall out)
Dont want to be your monkey wrench (fall in, fall out)
Dont want to be your monkey wrench (fall in, fall out)
Dont want to be your monkey wrench

The song "Monkey Wrench" by the Foo Fighters is an extended metaphor. In this song the singer is telling of how someone used him and he doesn't appreciate it. In the metaphor "Don't want to be your monkey wrench" the singer compares himself to a monkey wrench, a tool that people can use to fix or undo things. The metaphor is repeated many times to show that he is angry with the way he is treated. His tone is mildly angry which expresses his point in a clearer way. The extended metaphor that he is a monkey wrench helps clearify the message of the song.

The Pros and Cons of Breathing

Bury me standing under your window with the cinder block in handYeah cause no one will ever feel like this againAnd if I could move I'm sure it would only be to crawl back to youI must have dragged my guts a block... they were gone by the time we {talked}...[Chorus: x2]Whoa, I want to hate you half as much as I hate myself{But} you know that I could crush you with my voiceStood on my roof and tried to see you forgetting about meHide the details I don't want to know a thingI hate the way you say my name like it's something secretMy pen is the barrel of the gun. Remind me which side you should be on[Chorus x2]Stood on my roof and tried to see you forgetting about meHide the details I don't want to know a thingI wish that I was as invisible as you make me feel [x2](Whoa, I want to hate you half as much as I hate my) [x2] (1..2..3..4..)[Chorus x2]

In the Fall Out Boy song "The Pros and Cons of Breathing", Fall Out Boy uses a simile in an effective way. The simile is "I hate the way you say my name like it's something secret." The singer compares the tone in which someone says his name to the same tone which someone tells a secret. This shows the person is cautious of saying the singer's name for some reason. One must assume the person says it secretly because they don't want people to know of the singer and gives the listener a since of a scandolous relationship going on. Fall Out Boy's use of this simile helps explain the message of the song better.

Longview

Sit around and watch the tube, but nothing's onChange the channels for an hour or twoTwiddle my thumbs just for a bitI'm sick of all the same old shitIn a house with unlocked doorsAnd I'm fucking lazyBite my lip and close my eyesTake me away to paradiseI'm so damn bored I'm going BLIND!!!And I smell like shitPeel me off this velcro seat and get me movingI sure as hell can't do it by myselfI'm feeling like a DOG IN HEATBarred indoors from the summer streetI locked the door to MY OWN CELLAnd I lost the keyBite my lip and close my eyesTake me away to paradiseI'm so damn bored I'm going BLIND!!!And I smell like shitI GOT NO MOTIVATIONWHERE IS MY MOTIVATIONNO TIME FOR THE MOTIVATIONSMOKING MY INSPIRATIONSit around and watch the phone, but no one's callingCall me pathetic, call me WHAT YOU WILLMy mother says to get a jobBut she don't like the one SHE'S gotWhen masturbation's lost its funYou're fucking lazyBite my lip and close my eyesTake me away to paradiseI'm so damn BOREDI'm going blindAnd loneliness has to sufficeBite my lip and close my eyesI was slipping away to paradiseSome say,"Quit or I'll go BLIND."But it's just a myth

Green Day uses a simile in their song "Longview", which is a song that the singer sings about being bored and kept from doing the things he likes. The simile is "I'm feeling like a dog in heat." The singer is comparing himself to a dog in heat. When a dog is heated he seems to be disoriented and can't find a way to deal with the heat. This shows he is trapped in a bad state with no way to get out of it.

Song Analysis
God Save the Queen
In the 1970’s the punk rock rebellion cause much controversy. Many would say the Sex Pistols were the most rebellious band of the era because of their notorious lyrics and care-free attitude. Their defiant ways led the way for the many bands to join the “revolution” and change rock for years to come. Although the Sex Pistol did not show much musical complexity, their sound is still heard in almost every genre of rock. Also the Sex Pistols did not use many poetic devices but their lyrics contained messages that were interpreted in many ways. Of the punk rock songs that showed rebellion, none had the impact that “God Save the Queen” had because of its controversial lyrics and the controversy it caused.
When “God Save the Queen” was released punk rock was becoming more and more popular and England did not want that. The song was received as an attack on the Queen which is what made it so popular to the punk crowd because they loved the defiant lyrics that went against the norm. “God Save the Queen” quickly moved up the British charts and was at number two at one point before being banned from the radio because it was thought of as a stab at the Queen. The band claimed it was not directed at her but merely a warning to all of England that if they keep living the way they are they will fall and not be able to keep living the way they do. The Sex Pistols stand on the direction of England in “God Save the Queen” was a rebellious act that was not received well.
In the first verses the singer says the queen is not a good person and that she does not have the qualities of a just person. It says “God save the queen, she ain’t no human being.” This shows that the Sex Pistols disapprove of the queen and think she is cruel and has no regard for equality. This is a reason the song was thought of as offensive and caused an uproar amongst the high officials in England. It also says “There is no future, In England’s dreaming.” The Sex Pistols said this because they wanted to express the fact that if England does not change than there will not be anymore triumph for the country. This caused much argument within England because many agreed with how the country was being run. The first verses show much rebellion and independence.
The chorus says “God Save the Queen, We mean it man, We love our queen, God saves.” These lines show that they want England to succeed but that can only be achieved through a new system of government. They seem to be praying to God because they have no other hope. In the last chorus the like “We love our queen” was changed to “And there is no future.” This shows that the time may have passed to fix England and they will not have a future because the time to act has past. The chorus of this song is sung with anger and annoyance because the singer is fed up with the government. The extro says that there is no future for anyone. “God Save the Queen” has lyrics that caused much argument.
“God Save the Queen” does not have many poetic devices and most of the lines mean what the say. There are two metaphors in “God Save the Queen.” The first metaphor says “We’re the flowers in the dustbin” which means they are the only good things in a group of terrible things. The other metaphor is “We’re the poison in your human machine” which means they are the reason England has gone down hill. Although “God Saves the Queen” lacks numerous poetic devices, it is still a well written song.
Of the punk rock songs that showed rebellion, none had the impact that “God Save the Queen” had because of its controversial lyrics and the controversy it caused. “God Save the Queen” is a song that to this day is regarded as one of the most ground-breaking and bold songs in history. The ripple effect of this song change rock forever and paved the way for almost all punk bands since then. The Sex Pistols’ unique sound and thirst for trouble is what made them one of the most world-shattering bands of all time.

God Save the Queen

“God Save the Queen”
By: Sex Pistols

God Save the Queen
The fascist regime
They made you a moron
Potential H-bomb

God save the queen
She ain't no human being
There is no future
In England's dreaming

Don't be told what you want
Don't be told what you need
There's no future, no future,
No future for you

God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves

God save the queen
'Cause tourists are money
And our figurehead
Is not what she seems

Oh God save history
God save your mad parade
Oh Lord God have mercy
All crimes are paid

When there's no future
How can there be sin
We're the flowers in the dustbin
We're the poison in your human machine
We're the future, your future

God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves

God save the queen
We mean it man
And there is no future
In England's dreaming

No future, no future,
No future for you
No future, no future,
No future for me

No future, no future,
No future for you
No future, no future
For you

Welcome to Paradise

"Welcome To Paradise"
By: Green Day
Dear mother,
Can you hear me whining?
It's been three whole weeks
Since that I have left your home
This sudden fear has left me trembling
Cause now it seems that I am out here on my own
And I'm feeling so alone
Pay attention to the cracked streets
And the broken homes
Some call it the slums
Some call it nice
I want to take you through
a wasteland I like to call
my home
Welcome To Paradise
A gunshot rings out at the station
Another urchin snaps and left dead on his own
It makes me wonder why I'm still here
For some strange reason it's now
Feeling like my home
And I'm never gonna go
Pay attention to the cracked streets
And the broken homes
Some call it slums
Some call it nice
I want to take you through
a wasteland I like to call
my home
Welcome To Paradise
Dear mother,
Can you hear me laughing
It's been six whole months since
Since that I have left your home
It makes me wonder why I'm still here
For some strange reason it's now
Feeling like my home
And I'm never gonna go
Pay attention to the cracked streets
And the broken homes
Some call it the slums
Some call it nice
I want to take you through
a wasteland I like to call
my home
Welcome To Paradise

In this song the singer is telling of his new life on his own. In the first verse he says he is scared and doesn't know how to live by himself. In the first chorus the reader feels as though the singer doesn't like the place he is singing about. Then in the second verse the singer tells of seeing scary things that make him wonder how he is still surviving. The second chorus has the same words as the first but makes the reader feel like the singer is starting to get used to his situation alone and that he may be able to survive living the way he is. In the final verse the singer starts with the same line that begins the song but instead of complaining he boasts of his accomplishment and new life. The singer is kind of saying "I told you so" because he learned how to live on his own. In the final chorus the reader feels like the singer has learned to love his new situation even with all the hardships. The chorus have a line that says "some call it slums, some call it nice". This shows that what one person might think is trash others might find treasure. This song shows rebellion because it is a boy leaving his family to live on his own. The song goes against society because it shows that people in harsh conditions can learn to live with it and don't all turn into bad people. The singers struggle to beable to live without help of others shows the rebellion in this early alternative song.
